Technologists training - Students intending to enter the area of Plastic /polymers technology should study Physics, chemistry and mathematics at the Class XII level. Plastic technologists may specialise at the graduate level through a BE course in Chemical/Polymer Engineering or a B.Sc course in Chemistry can be followed by a BTech/diploma in Polymer/Plastic Technology. Specialised M.Tech/M.Sc courses in Plastic/Polymer technology can be taken by BE/B.Tech(Plastic/Polymer)/B.Sc(Chem)graduates. GATE examination has to be cleared for admission to post graduate courses with MHRD scholarship.
Technicians training - Machine Maintenance technicians and Mould Design technicians can pursue 1-3 year courses after completing a diploma in mechanical/ tool / plastics technology after Class XII. Students completing Class X may opt to train for becoming plastic industry technicians through a 2-3 year diploma in plastic mould making and design.( Refer to courses)

Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) was established at Chennai in 1968 by the Govt.Of India with UNDP assistance. CIPET is a pioneering national institution under the aegis of Deptt. Of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers. Govt.of India. . The Institute is an apex body for promotion of plastics industries with regional centres in 11 States of India. CIPET has also been offering training facilities to international students from developing countries with a view to promote better understanding between the developing nations (and pave the way for rapid growth of plastic industries). CIPET has been recognised by the University of Madras as a Centre for conducting Research leading to Ph. D. in polymer Science and Technology and Polymer Engineering. The Institute has sophisticated machines and equipment in Design (CAD/CAM), Toolroom, Plastics Processing and Testing effective and practical oriented training. The Design department with CAD has the latest software for imparting effective training on product and mould design. CIPET centres are at Chennai, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Imphal, Patna, Howrah, Guwahati and Mysore. Plastics Processing division has broad range of practical training facilities in the form of conventional processing machines as well as modern micro-processor controlled processing machines. In addition to the training activities the Processing division is also competent enough to undertake mould proving and moulding job works in different processing machines.
CIPET’s testing laboratories have all the modern machinery’s and equipments. The Institutes have Mechanical , thermal, electrical, optical, characterisation, chemical, rheology and product testing labs.

* Post Graduate Diploma in Plastics Processing & Testing Duration/Age Limit:- 1½ years/ 24 yrs.
Eligibility: 3 year degree in science with chemistry as one of the subjects
* Post Diploma in Plastics Mould Design Duration/Age Limit:-1 year/24 yrs.
Eligibility: 3 year diploma in Mech/Plastic Tech/Tool Engg./ Plastics/Production Engineering & CIPET-DPMT/ equivalent
* Short duration skill and technology upgradation programmes (for technical personnel/executives of industries) in the area of design, tooling, processing, testing & Quality Control.

Entrepreneur Development Programmes - Entrepreneur Development Programmes are organized for potential entrepreneurs to assist them to become prosperous entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs are provided with adequate technical guidance for setting up of Plastics based Industry.
Training for Foreign Nationals : Students, technical personnel & executive from the Industries of SAARC and Developing countries, ILO, UNIDO/UNDP, Sponsored trainees/Fellows are trained by CIPET in different fields of Plastics Engineering & Technology.
Selection - Selection to these courses is based on academic record, a pass in Joint Entrance Exam and interview conducted simultaneously in July at Ahmedabad, Agartala, Amritsar, Ambala, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gauhati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chennai, Patna, Simla, Tiruchirapalli.
