The Union Public Service Commission, Shah Jahan Road, New Delhi 110 011 conducts the Civil Services examinations while Staff Selection Commissions conduct examinations for State Services. UPSC also conducts selection examinations for other Government Services besides Civil Services. Recruitment of Doctors, Engineers, Geologists, Economists and Statisticians for posts in the Central government organizations is done by UPSC. Doctors are appointed for the Central Health Scheme and Engineers for the Central Public Works Departments and other public sector undertakings.
Indian Forest Service (IFtS)
An All India Forest Service was created in 1966 for better and integrated forest management. It has a separate selection test conducted by UPSC. Aspirants to this Service must have a keen interest in the forest wealth, of the country and in its management and conservation. They are to be placed in command of the forest resources both for supply and protection. The multifarious nature of their responsibility makes this service a challenging career. State services also conduct their own exam for state cadre.
Forest officer is on probation for 2 years followed by allocation to the State cadre.

Eligibility - Age 21-30 years (on 1st July of the year of application).

Test - The test is of the objective type test. Candidates qualifying the objective type test go through a rigorous medical examination, e.g., a walk of 25 km. in 4 hours for men and 14 km. in 4 hours for girls. The final selection is made at an interview.

UPSC conducts examination each year for IES or ISS. Candidate have to give performance for the service. On completion of training and passing the departmental examinations they are placed on probation period before being transferred for service in India or abroad.

Candidates qualifying in written examination are offered jobs on merit and choice of the organisation they desire to join. Examination and selections are done for following branches :

- Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
The written examination consists of 4 subject papers and a paper on General Ability Test consisting of General English and General Studies.

Geologists Examination
Geologists Examination is conducted for selecting candidates for appointment in Geological survey of India. They are also selected for appointment in the Central Ground Water Board.
