Lawyers need to integrate the knowledge of history, philosophy, economics, literature and political science. Legal education is designed to develop analytical ability, research skills, legal writing, public speaking and decision-making skills. Various emperical teaching methodologies and evaluation methods are being used.

After +2 - (BA LL.B)

Students after Class XII can enter a 5 year course in Law for a BA LL.B (Hons) degree. The 5 year Law course is offered by National Law schools/ Universities. Seven National Law schools conduct a Common Law Admission Test(CLAT). The law schools are - NLSIU, Bangalore; NLI, Bhopal;HNLU, Raipur; NLU, Jodhpur; NALSAR, Hyderabad; NLU, Kolkota; GNLU, Gandhinagar.These have been detailed in this article. 30% seats are reserved for girls in these colleges.

Law courses for graduates - LL.B

LLB is a 3 year course for graduates. The LL.B course is conducted by most universities and their affiliated colleges in India. The degree entitles the graduate to practice law.

After LLB

After a 5 year law course (BA LL.B) or a 3 year (LL.B) course there are opportunities for further studies in areas related to law. These studies could be a full time post graduation (LLM) of 2 years duration or various diploma courses of 1 year duration. There is also possibility for studying abroad.

Courses and Institutions

Law courses are conducted in most universities. This section deals with 5 year courses and some specializations in law. The premier Law school has been dealt with in depth.

Premier Institutions

The National Law School, Bangalore www.nis.ac.in - The National Law School is an autonomous institution with a ‘Deemed University’ status from the University Grants Commission. The management of the institution rests with the organized legal profession of the country. The Chief Justice of India is the chairman of the General Council of the School and a number of retired judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts and senior advocates assist the school in its teaching programmes. The school follows methods of teaching such as lectures, discussions, case study, moot courts and project work and uses innovative teaching methods.

The teaching faculty and visiting/guest lecturers at NLS are the best of the Bar and the Bench. Students are also exposed to moot court competitions and student exchange programmes. NLS supports student exchange programmes with international law schools such as the London School of Economics and the University of Hamburg. Exchange programmes with law schools in France and the US are also in the pipeline. NLS organises internships for their students with law firms and corporations. The objective is to hone their practical skills. Starting salaries for freshers are Rs.6-7 lakhs per annum.

Courses 5 year BA. LLB

Eligibility - Students who have passed the Higher Secondary school examination 10+2 system or an equivalent examination securing 50% in all the core subjects and English language put together. The student should not be 20 years of age on July 1 of the year of admission (22 years for SC/ST)

Intake and reservations - The seats for the course are 80 with the following reservations : SC - 15%, ST- 7 1/2%

Selection - (Indian nationals) - Admission is made purely based on the merit in Common Law Admission Test .

Foreign nationals - The admission of foreign nationals is based on satisfying the prescribed academic qualification and on an interview. They are exempted from the admission test and the rules concerning the age limit.

Cost - Approximately 30,000 per annum (including hostel fee). For foreign nationals $1500 tution only.(for revised rates see college website)
