Ancient, Medieval and Modern Indian History

After 10+2 almost all Universities have courses available in Indian History both at graduate and post graduate levels. Hence only specialised History related courses are described.

Archaeology

Post graduates in archaeology, students of classical languages like Persian, Sanskrit or Pali scripts or of Islamic history are trained and employed with Archaeological departments.

National Archives

Post graduates in History (ancient, modern or medieval) who have specialized in Archival work are recruited through tests conducted by the UPSC for jobs in the National Archives.

The National Archives at Delhi houses all historical data which has relevance to Indian culture and its past. The regional offices are at Bhopal and Jaipur. Archives or records are documented, catalogued, preserved for the reference of historical, social and political researchers.

­Museologists/Curators

Museology is an applied science dealing with management and development of museums. The concepts of museology has undergone a sea change over the years. Previously the field was connected only with archaeology, art and paintings. But now, museology embraces several other aspects e.g. anthropology, arms & armour, numismatics, epigraphy, jewellery.

The National Museum, New Delhi is the first Museum University of India. It trains museologists in areas of Art, History, Conservation, Curatory and Historical Research. It offers MA and Ph.D programmes in various aspects of Museography and Museology. Knowledge of a classical/foreign language will be very useful for this field.

Conservators and Restorers

Both practical and theoretical training are required for the job. Practical skills are taught at Art Schools. A background in Chemistry and training in Art is the ideal combination. Courses in History of Art and Museology and are useful for conservators and restorers.

National Museum, New Delhi

NMIHACM is a 'Museum University' established by the Department of Culture, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India and is an integral part of the National Museum, New Delhi. It offers M.A. & Ph. D courses in History of Art, Conservation & Restoration of Works of Art and Museology.

Courses -- M.A. (History of Art)

Eligibility - B.A. in History of Art, Fine Arts, History, Archaeology, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Literature classical languages.

-- M.A. (Conservation & Restoration of Works of Art)

Eligibility - B.Sc. with Chemistry or Physics as one of the main subjects or B.F.A.

-- Ph. D. (History of Art)

-- M.A. (Museology)

Eligibility - Masters Degree in History of Art, Fine Arts, Ancient History & Culture, Ethnography, Archaeology, Comparative Literature/Aesthetics or M. Phil.

-- Ph. D. (Conservation & Restoration of Works of Art), Ph. D. (Museology)

Eligibility - Masters Degree in Conservation of Works of Art or M.Sc. in Chemistry, Physics, etc. with sufficient experience in relevant field or M.Phil. Candidates admitted in Ph. D. with M.Sc. degree will have to qualify courses of M.A. (Conservation) of NMIHACM.

-- Ph. D. (Museology)

Eligibility - M. A. in Museology/Museum Studies or equivalent.

Desirable (all Ph. Ds) - Knowledge of any classical or foreign language such as Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, Greek, Latin, French, German, Italian etc. Candidates having qualified JRF test conducted by CSIR/UGC shall be preferred.

-- Certificate Courses

The scope of study in the Institute extends to specialisation in global art, so as to produce distinguished scholars in the areas of African, Chinese and South Asian Art.

This Institute is also running three certificate courses in art appreciation for persons with a general interest in art. These courses based on lectures, slide shows and viewing of the originals in the vast collections of the National Museum are intended to increase awareness of art among art lovers.

One of the two courses pertaining to ‘India - art and culture’ encourages students to appreciate Indian art of different times - its architecture, sculptures, paintings, decorative. The second certificate course is intended to encourage students to appreciate arts of different parts of the world, with special emphasis on Indian art, near and Far Eastern art, Western art and International modern art.

Admission to these certificate courses is through an interview to determine the extent of the candidate’s knowledge and interest in art. Bhartiya Kala Nidhi is a course in hindi medium.

The school has a number of courses for both professionals and amateurs. The course offered are for both sponsored and private candidates in the fields of archives, record management, preservation, micro photography, etc.

-- Diploma in Archival studies covering record management, conservation, reprography and information science. Duration - 1 year

Eligibility - Open to Indian/Foreign candidates with MA (History) 50% aggregate with one optional paper in Modern Indian History. Foreign candidates must have completed graduation. Upper age limit is 50 for both categories.

Short term courses

-- Archives administration covering acquisition, arrangement, upkeep and retrieval of records. (6 weeks)
