Air force
Air force recruits (unmarried males) as Airmen to its technical and other branches in Group X and Group Y trades. For technical trades classes X-XII with Physics and Maths/Dip in Engineering are the minimum eligibility and for Group Y minimum eligibility is matriculation. Detailed below are Group X Education Instructors Trade and Group Y Technical Trade. Service conditions remain the same for all trades.
Senior Non-Commissioned Officer in the Trade (Group X) (Recruitment to other trades is similar)
Education Instructor.
The Indian Air Force recruits graduates (or those with higher qualification)
(i) B.A. (Hons)/B.Sc. (Hons)
(ii) B.A./B.Sc. and a teaching Degree or Diploma
(iii) B.A/B.Sc. with one year teaching experience in a recognized educational institution.
Candidates with B.A./B.Sc. Age requirement is 19-22 yrs.
For candidates with M.A./M.Sc. – 19-25 yrs.
Service Conditions - Tenure - Enrolment is for an initial period of 20 years extend able up to the age of 57 years in spells of 6/3 years as per the Air Force Instructions subject to medical fitness and performance and other conditions as may be laid down from time to time. However, training is liable to be terminated at any time if the trainee fails to achieve the required standards in academics, profession, physical fitness, discipline or is found to be medically unfit.
Pay and Perks - Salary starts during training itself. The initial basic pay is Rs. 4670/- pm, which subsequent years may go up to Rs. 10,200/- pm depending upon the rank attained. In addition to this Dearness and other allowances and perks such as free food, free clothing, free medical facilities, free accommodation, leave travel concession etc., are also provided as per the existing rules.
Selection Procedure - Written Test
Subject - Written test (Objective type) in English, General Awareness and Current Affairs. Those who qualify in this test are given subjective test in English followed by an interview.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT) - Qualifying in PFT is mandatory. This will consist of 1.6 km run to be completed in a maximum of 7 minutes.
Airmen Entry
Non-Technical Trades (Group Y)/Technical (Intermediate) Trades.
The Indian Air Force recruits unmarried male Indian Citizens (subjects of Nepal are also eligible) as Airmen in the Non-Technical Trades (Group Y).
Eligibility - For non technical trades candidate should have passed Matriculation / Equivalent Examination with a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate and at least pass marks in English.
For technical trades - 10+2/Intermediate with Physics, Maths and English with a minimum of 50%/Diploma in Engg./Mech./Elec./electronics/Automobile/Comp Sc./Instrumentation Tech from a govt. recognised polytechnic institute.
Age - 15- 18 years.
Medical Standards – Minimum Height - 152.5. cm , Chest minimum expanded, chest measurement: 75 cm. With minimum range of expansion: 5 cm.
Weight - Corresponding to height & age.
Vision - Unaided 6/36 Aided visual acuity of 6/12 each eye + 3 Dioptres Colour Vision up to defective unsafe. Normal Hearing each ear.
Dental - Should have healthy gums and good set of teeth.
General Health - Free from all communicable diseases, medical or surgical deformity. Should have had no history of seizures or Psychiatric ailment. Candidate must be physically and mentally fit for duty anywhere in the world, in any climate and terrain.

Perks such as free food, free clothing, free medical facilities, free accommodation, leave travel concession etc, are also provided as per the existing rules.
Selection - Written test (objective type) is held during November and February in English. Intelligence & General Awareness tests have also to be cleared. They have to qualify in both the papers. The questions in intelligence and General Awareness are in English and Hindi. Results are declared on the same day and successful candidates have to take the Trade Allocation Test.
For technical branch, candidates have to pass an English test. Then they are tested in Physics & Maths. The test is objective. There is a Physical Fitness test also. Finally students must qualify in the interview.
Group Z recruitments are made for various trades such as musician, priest etc.

Navy
The Indian Navy (Artificer Apprentices /Matric Entry/technical branch Sailors)
The Indian Navy is a high technology service, which operates and maintains highly sophisticated ships, submarines and aircraft. The propulsion machinery, weapons, sensors and equipments on board these weapon platforms are operated and maintained by sailors. The Indian Navy recruits sailors as Artificer Apprentices for AA and as Matric Entry who are given training at various stages during their service.
The initial basic training is given at INS Chilkam Distt-Khurda, Orissa. This is followed by further training at various Naval Establishments all over the country. Selected sailors are also sent abroad for training in specific disciplines. Prior to release from the service, sailors are also given pre-release courses to enable them to settle down in civil life. Sailors in the Navy are liable to serve any where in India, on board ships and submarines or abroad as required by the service.

Pay & Allowance
(a) During the initial training period the approximate emoluments are as follows:- AA-Rs.4300 pm, MER-Rs.4500 pm. Dip Artificer- Rs 6300 pm
(b) On completion of initial training, the approximate emoluments at present rate depending on rank and number of years of service will be:- AA-Rs.7000 to Rs.16,900 pm. MERs-Rs.5300 to Rs.16,000 pm. Dip Artificer Rs 7400/- to Rs 16,900/- pm approximately.
Promotion
Promotion prospects exist up to the rank of Master chief Petty Officer1 (equivalent to Subedar Major). Opportunities for promotion to Commissioned Officer also exist for those who perform well and qualify the prescribed examinations.
Perquisites
During the entire period of training and thereafter, sailors are given books, reading material, uniform, food and accommodation etc free of cost. On completion of training sailors get leave on free railway warrant. Sailors are entitled to medical treatment and Leave Travel Concession for self and dependents, Group Housing benefits, and other privileges at Government expense. Insurance cover of Rs.5 lakhs is given by Naval Headquarters at a nominal premium of Rs500 per month. Sailors also have the privilege to avail up to 60 days Annual Leave and 30 days Casual leave every year. Post retirement benefits include pension, gratuity and leave encashment. Children education and house rent allowances are also admissible.
Eligibility - Only Unmarried male Indian Citizens and subjects of Nepal are eligible.
Qualifications - (a) Artificer Apprentices-(AA) Minimum 60% or more marks in aggregate in 10+2/equivalent examination with Physics and Maths
(b) Matric Entry Recruits-(MER) Minimum 55% aggregate marks in Matriculation/equivalent with Science and Maths OR 50% or more aggregate marks in 10+2/equivalent with Physics and Maths.
Age - 161/2 –191/2 AA and 161/2-191/2 Matric entry
Technical branch
3 years diploma with minimum 50% marks in mechanical/electrical/electronics/ telecommunication/ aeronautical/ship building/instrumentation engineering/metallurgical from a government recognised polytechnic /institute.
Age - 181/2 to 211/2
Selection - Sailors are selected through a Written test, Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and Medical examination.
Written Test - The question paper are bilingual (Hindi & English) and of objective type. The question paper has four sections i.e English, Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge. The standard of question paper are of Matric level (10+2 for AA). Duration of question paper will of one hour. For technical branch there will be additional sections on Electronics, Electrical, and Mechanical. The candidates have to attempt the section according to their area of specialisation at the diploma level.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT) – Qualifying in Physical Fitness Test is mandatory. This will consist of 1.6 km run to be completed in 7 minutes, 20 squat ups (Uthak Baithak) and 10 Push ups.
Medical Standards - Weight co-related with height and proportionate chest with minimum expansion of 5 cms. Good medical and physical health, free from any disease/disability. No cardiovascular, surgical deformities or infection of ears. No history of fits or psychiatric ailment, Minimum height 157 cms(Relax able to 152 cms for Artificer Apprentices). Training - AA-9 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 8 weeks of sea training. Thereafter 4 years training in technical training establishment at the Navy.
MER-24 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka followed by 24 weeks professional training in the allotted trade in technical training establishment at the Navy.
Diploma Artificer- 9 weeks basic training at INS chilka, followed by 4 weeks of sea training and 80 weeks of technical training.
Initial Engagement - The initial engagement is subject to successful completion of training which is extend able to the age of 57 years depending on Medical fitness, the rank attained and satisfactory performance. The initial engagement is as follows:- AA-20 Yrs. ME-15 yrs. Diploma artificer 10 years.
Sports Quota - Outstanding Sportsmen who have participated at International /National/State level may apply to the Secretary, Indian Navy Sports Control Board, Room No.330, ‘C’ Wing, NHQ, Sena Bhawan, New Delhi-110 011. The candidates are to qualify in the sports trials in addition to Physical Fitness Test, Written and Medical examination.

Note - Upto 40% personnel from other ranks can get commission at various stages of their career in all the three services by accuiring requisite qualifications and passing the selection board
Indian Navy Commercial Diving
Diving School, Kochi conducts on the lines of HSE (Health and Safety Executive, UK) Part1 qualification and the course is termed as IDS (Indian Diving Standard) 1. Individuals qualifying the course are certified to work upto a depth of 55 meters using Air Diving equipment.
Eligibility - Male Indian Citizens more than 18 years and less than 28 years of age .
Educational Qualification - (a) 10th class examination of Central/State Education Board minimum marks 50% Alternatively candidates should have passed subsequent higher examination (XII Class) of central or state examination
(b) Candidates must be fluent either in Hindi or in English.
Medical Standards have to be cleared. Candidates are disqualified due to : Inability to clear the ears via eustachian tubes. (b) Perforated ear drum, chronic otitis media.
(c) Chronic sinusitis, nasal obstruction.
(d) Should not be obese
(e) Dental caries, loss of incisor, artificial dentures
(f) Any chronic lung disease, past or present and history of thoracic surgery
(g) Any functional or organic cardiovascular disease, essential hypertension, disbetes
(h) Proven peptic ulcer, chronic diarrhoea, history of extensive abdominal surgery, evidence of hernia or tendency thereto, varicose veins or hemorrhoids unless already successfully treated
(j) Chronic or recurrent disease of genito urinary system.
(k) Past history of fits, psychiatric illness repeated headaches, blackouts, severe concussion or cranial surgery
(l) Addiction to alcohol & drugs.
(m) Stammering
(n) Skeletal or Arthritic disability
(p) Chronic skin conditions
(q) STD and AIDS. On completion of screening selected candidates undergo comprehensive medical examination at Naval Hospital, Kochi.
Physical Standard - Candidate should be a good swimmer with good physical stamina.
Selection - Applications are screened at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, Kochi and call letters are sent to shortlisted candidates who are required to report to Diving School, Kochi for aptitude test, screening and training.
Preference is based on
(i) Percentage of marks obtained in 10th class examination of Central/State Board
(ii) Age factor (younger candidates will be given preference) .
Aptitude Test & Screening - This test is to assess the suitability of candidates in diving by conducting physical fitness test and other tests conducted in controled conditions. Those who do not qualify the aptitude test are rejected. The screening will be conducted by way of competition for physical fitness and swimming to choose the best twenty candidates who will be provisionaly selected to undergo the course.
Medically fit candidates may build up swimming standards by long distance swimming and physical fitness by long distance jogging prior to reporting for the course. Aspirants should not undertake unaided/breath hold diving for the purpose of preparation for the course.
