Australia World Class Education & Training

Your Ad Here

When choosing a study destination overseas there are a number of important things to think about before reaching your decision. Australia has a world-class education and training system, which welcomes students from other countries.

Students go to Australia from many countries because of the high standard of education offered and because Australia is an attractive, friendly, beautiful and safe place to live.

The Australian Government and Australian education and training providers have joined forces to establish the Australian International Education Foundation (AIEF) to promote internationally the high quality and standard of education, training and research opportunities which Australia has to offer. The partnership embodied in the AIEF reflects the commitment from all parties to promote and deliver quality education and training services and to pursue excellence in international study and research.

Australian education institutions offer a broad spectrum of courses ranging from English language training at school to advanced areas of post-doctoral work. There are also opportunities for international students, teachers and university staff to undertake study or research in Australia through award and exchange arrangements. Flexible programs of study, which can combine English language courses with study in other fields, are also available to cater to the diverse needs of international students.

Australia compares very favourably with other more traditional destinations considered by international students.

Below are some of the reasons to help you in your final decision - which may well be one of the most important decisions in your career.

  • Australia's education system is of the highest international standard.
  • Degrees, diplomas and other awards receive worldwide recognition.
  • For students coming from Asia and the South Pacific there are frequent direct air connections to the east and west coast of Australia. We also have similar time zones.
  • Australia's multi-cultural society makes it a very attractive option for both non-English speaking and English speaking students.
  • Because of Australia's vast size and the consistently high standard of education and training delivery, one of the most difficult decisions for any international student will be deciding where to study. Universities, colleges and schools are not only situated in all the larger cities, but many are also located in small rural towns and coastal villages.
  • Australia's size also offers an enormous diversity of climate to suit all tastes. Choices range from cool and moist to hot and tropical, with regions in between enjoying a warm temperate climate.
  • Most institutions offer excursions for international students to places of interest, both locally and, quite often much further afield. Australia is one of the most beautiful countries in the world to discover and should be a priority for any overseas visitor.
  • Australia's living conditions are among the highest in the world and the generally fine weather encourages a healthy, relaxed lifestyle with a strong emphasis on outdoor life and sport. There is an abundance of fresh, local produce, meat and local seafoods. Specialty imported foods are also widely available.
  • Living and tuition costs compare favourably with other countries of a similar standard. Australia is strongly promoted as a multi-cultural society and has become home to a wide variety of citizens from numerous ethnic backgrounds. International students should have no difficulty in meeting others from their home country, and neighbouring countries in their region.

Universities in Australia
Higher education in Australia has long enjoyed an international reputation for excellence where quality across the system has been of paramount importance. Australian universities are part of a clearly recognised international community of scholarship, the foundations of which are the creation, preservation and dissemination of knowledge.

Academic staff in Australian universities are recruited from around the world, and Australian academic staff and graduates are eagerly recruited in other countries. The willingness of leading international universities to accept graduates from Australian universities for admission to postgraduate studies provides a clear indication of the high acceptance of the quality of output of Australian universities. To a large extent it is this inbuilt aspiration for international recognition, which provides continuing assurance of the quality and standards of Australian institutions.

Most Australian universities are internationalising their campuses by actively encouraging student and staff exchange programs and the development of international curricula and research collaboration. The first Australian university was established in 1850. By 1911, principal universities were established in each major city. Today there are 38 universities throughout Australia. These universities have an excellent reputation in other countries, including the USA and Britain. They also rank highly in modern computer facilities and technologies.

Australian universities offer two levels of study:

  • undergraduate - including Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas and Bachelor Degrees; and
  • Postgraduate - including Graduate Diplomas and Certificates, Masters Degrees by either coursework or research, and Doctoral Degrees.

University award outcomes and length or course
Students generally begin their major/specialisation in their first year of study and can complete their Bachelors Degree in a minimum of three years in disciplines such as general science, business, information technology and arts. Education, engineering and law degrees require four years of study while medicine takes longer. For graduate studies most universities require a prerequisite of four years of study in the particular subject area for which graduate enrolment is desired.

Many students consider enrolling in a Graduate Diploma course, which is a one-year graduate program in Australia that can enable students to qualify for a masters program. Masters Degrees are based upon research or coursework (or a combination). Increasingly, Australian universities are offering coursework Masters degrees of one year to 18 months.

Most postgraduate degrees are by research only, which means you pay tuition fees to perform research work at the campus, but may not have a set schedule of lectures and tutorials to attend. In most cases a thesis is required before a student is eligible to graduate.

Academic requirements
Australian universities place more emphasis on understanding and applying concepts and theories and being able to examine critically different arguments and viewpoints than on route learning. Students are expected to participate in class discussions and to ask questions if they do not understand something. Most universities offer counselling services and assistance to students to develop effective study skills.

Entry into Australian universities is determined by each institution's own assessment of how a student's existing qualifications compare with the content of the Australian institution's courses. The same method of assessment will be undertaken by foreign universities presented with Australian degrees. In assessing a student's academic standing, an Australian institution will look at both the level and the content of the courses completed by the applicant.

Australian universities operate on a semester basis. For the majority of universities, the first semester begins in mid February and ends in late June. Second semester begins in mid July and ends in late November. Summer break occurs during December and January. There are mid semester breaks which occur during both semesters of the year. The timing of semesters at private universities may vary slightly. Entry into Australian universities is highly competitive and it is advisable to apply for admission to more than one university.

Your Ad Here

National and some international airlines recruit cabin crew by calling for applications through leading newspapers. Details of eligibility for these appointments are as follows :

Eligibility -

The national air carriers, Air India and Indian Airlines and some of the private air carriers recruit graduates in the age group of 19-25 years for training as Air Hostesses and Flight Pursers. Preference is given to Degree or Diploma holders in Hotel Management/Tourism. Female candidates from the Home science background, fulfilling other requirements, are also preferred. Some private airlines, however, have in past selected applicants after class 12 in the age group of 18 - 21 years. International Airlines recruit airhostesses in the age group of 18-35 years.

Recruitment of Flight pursers from India by International Airlines has only been initiated recently.

Good language, ability and proficiency in English, Hindi, a regional language and at least one foreign language are essential requirements for inflight crew members working for National or International carriers. Some foreign airlines give weightage to previous customer service experience and also give preference to candidates who are fluent in the language of the region in which the airline is operating, e.g., an airline operating in South-East Asia region would give preference to a candidate who has some knowledge of the language of the region.

Physical requirements -

Air Hostesses should have a minimum height of 157.5 cm and Flight Pursers 163 cm, proportionate weight is desirable. Domestic airlines minimum height requirement is 154.5 cms. Normal eyesight without glasses or a minimum uncorrected distant vision of 6/40 is acceptable. Total power of contact lenses (for correcting distance vision should not exceed - 2D minus two dioptres)

Selection -

While most airlines maitain data banks of prospective candidates suitable for cabin crew recruitment, vacancies are generally advertised from time to time. The process of selection followed by national carriers is slightly different from international carriers. The former, after careful scrutiny of applications, call candidates for written test comprising of general knowledge, mental ability and verbal ability. This is followed by an interview and group discussion. International airlines on the other hand conduct a preliminary interview during which the measurement of height and weight of the applicants is also checked.

Candidates then have to take a written test which consists of general knowledge, mental ability, language ability (including vocabulary, listening, reading, speaking test for Hindi and English). This is followed by a main interview, during which the candidates language fluency, diction, voice, communication skill, personality and reaction to adverse situations is assessed. Candidates are expected to have good knowledge of the aviation industry.

Training -

Selected candidates are trained by airlines. Each airline has a training schedule for the recruited inflight staff and this is carried out at their training centres or agencies appointed by them. Air India and Jet Airways trains its cabin crew at Mumbai while Indian Airlines at Hyderabad. International Airlines send their recruited candidates to their headquarters where the training is carried out over a span of few weeks.

During the training, recruits are taught technical, safety and interpersonal skills. They are familiarised with aviation technicalities as well as about the destinations they are expected to be flying on. Food and beverage service, emergency management and training in first aid comprise the practical skills training. Most of the practical training including flight safety exercises are carried out in mock air craft cabins. The training generally lasts for 6-8 weeks after which flight trainees are assigned to work in the economy class. During that period they also participate in progressive training and to enhance their inflight skills.

The training is conducted in Airline environment and in a mock up aircraft cabin. At various stages of training practical and written tests are taken. The course includes study in food and drink service and galley management, currency exchange, customs and immigration regulations and documentation, first aid and medical training, safety and survival and care of special passengers, personal hygiene and grooming.

The form of the course includes lectures, visits, demonstrations, discussion, films and slides and emergency procedure practice. After completion of the initial course, entrants have to go through a probationary period of on-the-job training with the airline under the supervision of experienced cabin crew for between six months to a year. Crew also retrain in safety and emergency procedures for each type of aircraft they work in.

Aircraft manufacture

Introduction

Manufacturing of aircrafts for commercial or military use is a highly technical field.Tremendous amount of Research and Development function precedes production of an aircraft. This field has been developing steadily and can boast of real technological advancements.Space research and study has offered challenges and have continued to intrigue students to pursue relevant branches of engineering and other related subjects.

The Research & Development department of an aircraft manufacturer includes a variety of highly trained engineers, scientists and technicians specia-lising in areas such as aerospace, aeronautics, electronics, computer scien-ce, robotics, biomedicine, acoustics, chemistry, physics and meteorology.

When an aircraft is ready for manufacture it needs to undergo testflights. Research pilots have several years of experience and hence they are required to test prototype designs and suggest modifications for its optimum efficiency.

The manufacturing department has a team of engineers and technicians.
Engineering technicians, numerical control tool programmers, template
makers, machine operators tool inspectors, die makers. Technical writers
interpret scientific data to other departments and ensure coordinated work. Graphic artists work on the draft details of the aircrafts design.

Nature of Work

Aerospace Engineers

Aerospace engineering encompasses the fields of aeronautical and astronautical (spacecraft) engineering. Aerospace engineering is an emerging field in India but has been a challenging career in the west where major space programmes have taken off since long .

Aerospace engineers generally work as a team in designing, assembling and testing aircrafts and space crafts. Aerospace science draws people with backgrounds in physics, mathematics, earth sciences, aerodynamics and biological sciences.Aerospace engineers, however, have a backgroud in mechanical/electrical/mechanical engineering. Aerospace engineers may be required to work on the designing of complete aircrafts or may specialise in special areas of the industry such as missile guidance systems, propulsion, and guidance control systems. Aeronautical engineers work specifically with aircraft systems while astronautical engineers specialise in space craft systems.

Aerospace engineering is the study of the complexities of materials and structures put to use under atmospheric stress. Aerospace Engineers learn and apply the knowledge of aerodynamics, propulsion, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, flight mechanics, and structural analysis. They are also involved in cost analysis, operations research and may be required to update their work through research, conduct reliability studies, assess maintenance functions and also step out for marketing or administrative functions.

Aerospace Engineers who work on the designing of space crafts work with numerical and technical details using theoretical engineering principles. They may be called Analytical Engineers. Others who study the impact of atmospheric stress and how loads and weights behave under different atmospheric conditions are Stress Analysts. These engineers are experts at using computer systems to study such processes using complex formulas.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineers (CFD) use sophisticated high speed computers to develop models used in the study of fluid dynamics. They use simulations to study the behavior of elements around objects.

Aerospace Design Engineers work with engineers who are experts in aerodynamics, astrodynamics and structural engineering. The designing process involves computer aided design programmes. Manufacturing Engineering involves the development of individual components for aircraft and spacecraft manufacture and this involves coordination with the design team.

Aerospace Engineers (materials) assess the materials used for manufacture of aircrafts /spacecrafts particularly for their suitability in terms of density, strength, rigidity as well as cost effectiveness. They determine how various materials react to temperature and atmospheric variations.

Finished products undergo quality control assessments by engineers assigned to carry out the task. The products must pass tests of reliability and are assessed for its future maintenance.

Aircrafts and space crafts are always manufactured to the specific ations of the customer or for specific scientific tasks.Hence the marketing and sales function is also carried on by aerospace engineers. There job entails liason work with the technical team and clients for ensuring production specifications as well as ensuring that the product performs as planned.

Technicians

Technicians working in the aircrafts and space crafts manufacturing plants are trained as - Aeronautical and Aerospace technicians, Aircraft mechanics and Avionics technicians. Aeronautical Technicians and aerospace technicians differ from technologists/engineers in these fields as they are diploma holders .

They work with engineers to maintain, construct , test, operate, and maintain the basic structure of aircrafts/spacecrafts, as well as propulsion and control systems. They may be required to even assist in technical assessments. Airlines employ technicians to supervise maintenance of aircrafts and help in installation of new equipments. In manufacturing organisations technicians are part of the research, development and design work. Technicians working in astronautical engineering division i.e in space centres or in manufacturing conduct more specialised tasks. Physiological technicians operate and explain the procedures for using pressure suits, pressure chambers, ejection seats that simulate flying conditions. Flight training equipment , radio equipment, meteorological devise uses are their areas of responsibility. Avionic technicians repair, test, install and maintain radar and radio equipment aboard aircraft and space craft. Electronic technicians assist engineers in the development and assembly of electronic and electromechanical systems. All aspects of engineering, industrial, mechanical, metallurgical, instrumentation require technical support staff.

Work Environment

Aerospace engineers (Aeronautical/Astronautical) spend much time on the computer and drawing boards. Those engineers who are involved with
testing of components may have to work at the test sites. These could be in controlled test labs. The manufacturing task takes them to the shop floor and involves movement accross the production lines of aircraft/spacecraft
manufacturing plants.

Engineers are required to also travel for coordinating the activities of the manufacturers of small parts or while meeting with the clients. When there is a crash engineers may be required for the examination and assessment of the cause.

Personal Characteristics

The manufacture of aircrafts/ spacecrafts require very intelligent people. Good analytical ability, an excellent academic background, scientific acumen and responsible attitude is essential for aerospace engineers. Indian merchant navy ships are operated by public and private sector shipping companies and manned by trained navigators, marine engineers and crews. The responsibility for training of personnel for the Indian merchant navy lies with Government of India functioning through the Ministry of Surface Transport. Training institutions under the direct administrative control of the Directorate General of Shipping have been established.
Government maritime training ship ‘Chanakya’ Mumbai conducts a 3 year degree course leading to B.Sc in Nautical Sciences under the aegis of the University of Mumbai. The Directorate of Marine Engineering (DMET) Kolkata now known as Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI) imparts marine engineering education. These are two pre-sea training institutions for maritime education. Training ship ‘Chanakya’ prepares cadets for the navigation discipline. The highest post of navigating officer is that of a Master of a ship. In the case of Marine engineer the highest post is of Chief Engineer.
Certificates of competency – Navigation
Navigating officers -
For navigating officers it is important to obtain a certificate of competency under the rules and regulations in India relating to the examinations of Masters and Mates in the Mercantile Marine. The first certificate of competency for the Navigating Officer’s who qualify from T.S. “Chanakya” is that of Second Mate (Foreign Going). After successful completion of three years degree course in Nautical Science on Training ship “Chanakya”, the cadet officer is required to complete one year in the deck department on board a merchant ship before becoming eligible for the grant of Second Mates (FG) certificate of competency. During this period he is given a nominal stipend. Candidates who pass the B.Sc. (Nautical Science) examination, conducted by the University of Mumbai, are eligible for remission of sea service and certain exemptions in the certificate of competency examinations.
Second Mate Certificate of competency in the first exam for a cadet. It takes 8-10 months and students are given instruction in a nautical college for 3 months.
After possession of the certificate of competency of Second Mate (FG) such an officer is eligible to be appointed as 3rd officer/2nd officer on board a merchant ship and draws a handsome salary. For subsequent promotion, he has to render further sea service (18 months as OIC NW) to pass the higher examination namely First Mate (Foreign Going) and a further sea service of 18 months as OICNW or 1 year as CM for Master (Foreign Going). After service of 18 months the merchant navy personnel is eligible for the combined First Mate/Master’s Certificate of competency examination for which coaching is imparted for taking the exam. It takes 8-10 months. For the Master’s Certificate of competency mariners have to complete 36 months of sea time after the 2nd Mates exam and minimum 12 months after 1st Mates exam. The certificate of competency as Master (FG) entitles the officer to become the Captain of a merchant ship. It normally taken 10-12 year to become a Captain. The competency examinations are conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport through the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai.
Training for marine engineers
Merchant Navy vessels recruit engineers who have undergone training with the Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI) or mechanical/electrical engineers directly. When marine engineers are recruited directly they get exempted from Class II Part A examination. Thereafter they can attempt class I Part A exam after 1 ½ years seatime and Class I Part B thereafter. Other requirements for recruitment are the same for directly recruited engineers except that they do not get Class II Part A exemption.
On the marine engineering side, the lowest examination relates to the Second Class certificate of competency. Examinations are conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport in two parts ‘A’ and ‘B’. Candidates of MERI in possession of Final Passing Out Certificates are exempted from Part A. Part B of the Second Class Certificate can be obtained after completion of the qualifying sea-service and after obtaining Part ‘A’ of the certificate, unless exempted as in the case of MERI cadets. After completion of the training in MERI, a cadet is taken in as a Junior Engineer Officer on merchant navy ship. Subsequently, a Junior Engineer, subject to satisfactory service and passing of requisite examinations, is posted as a Third Engineer, Second Engineer and ultimately a Chief Engineer of a ship. Examinations for marine engineers are also conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport through the Director General Shipping, Mumbai.
Rules relating to examinations in respect of navigating officers and marine engineers are contained in Merchant Shipping (Examination of Engineers/Masters and Mates in Merchant Navy) Rules, which are priced publications.
Although Government undertakes no obligations to find employment for the trainees of T.S. Chanakya and MERI, the institutes do assist them in getting suitable employment with the India Shipping Companies.
Other entry routes into Engineering department
There are several other options to join the engine department. These are -
-- Apprenticeship from the naval dockyard/machinist coast guard/Indian Navy can enter on taking Part A of the Marine engineer Class IV exam. They can join as junior engineers.
-- ITI 2 year course with 50% can be followed by 4 months pre sea training for entry as Fitters and Petty officers.
-- BE Electrical/Electronic followed by 18 months training in approved marine workshops, basic safety courses and Part A of Marine Engineering Class IV exam can join the engine department.

-- XII with PCM and English with 50% can enter through 4 year workshop training route with 60% marks in the Marine Engineering course. They undergo 3 year course at an approved institute and become associate members of the Institution of Engineers and join merchant vessels as junior engineers. They complete sea time and take relevant courses and give the Class IV Certificate of competency examination.
-- Engineers from any dicipline can do a one year marine engineering course from a training institution (See courses).
-- BE Ship building/Ship Architecture (4 yrs.) entitles candidates to join 2 year trainee marine engineering course. BE Mech/Ship Architecture with 50% can join 1 year trainee marine engineering course.
Home Trade Zone Mariners
These are merchant vessels sailing along the Indian Coast only. These are called Near Coastal Voyage (NCV) Navigation certification for ships (500 gross tonnage or more)is open to X class pass students, minimum age 18 years/18 months sea service as deck cadet/3 years as deck ratings each having performed watch keeping duties for at least 6 months under supervision of the Master or officer of the deck department who has a valid certificate of competency. After receiving the certificate, appointment is as watch keeping officer on home trade ships or offshore vessels. These personnel are eligible after completing the required educational sea service requirement to take Second Mate Exam of Foreign Going Vessels.
Mate of a Home trade Ship –
After acquiring the certificate of competency as navigational watch keeping officer and completing 18 months sea service, training and assessment they are promoted as Mate on Home trade ship. To become Master of 500-3000 gross ton ships the certificate of competency as Mate of a home trade ship is required, 3 years sea service, completion of a ship management course, 90 days as Chief Mate or ship handling and manoeuvering, simulator training and examination and assessment is required. Master of home trade ship can join a foreign going ship at the second mate level.
Entry Home Trade Zone – Marine Engineers
X certificate holders/Engine room ratings with watch keeping certificate/Navy rating (machinist)/Engine driver (sea going)/ITI (deisel mechanic) training/Dip in Mech/Electrical Engineering/marine fitters from workshops or dockyards can be recruited, Class IV Engineers on clearing the MEO Class IV (NCV) Certificate of Competency and the required sea service and the modular courses and on board training are also recruited. Further career progress is the same as for marine engineers.
From deck cadet to officer
Another route into merchant navy is through presea training with private /or government training institutes. Students after completing 10+2 and presea training are recruited as deck cadets on board private national or international ships. Deck cadest are apprentices who are trained for the profession under the supervision of senior officers. On completion of on board training and passing the required examination they get the final appointment. Again, it is not enough to be just appointed.
Every promotion thereafter is after passing an exam, the first examination a deck cadet has to clear is the Third Mate’s exam which is offered to cadets three years after joining a ship. This examination tests navigating skill and watch-keeping duties on board. Cadets normally study while on board the ship. They are on deck duty all the time and through this, they actually practise what they are expected to answer in the exam. Deck duty involves safe navigation of the ship, loading and discharging of cargo, safety, and observance of national and international codes. Engineering cadets work under senior officers in running and maintenance of the engine department. To become an officer a cadet has to clear the next exam, the Second Mate’s exam to qualify to be an officer.
The Chief Mate’s exam is the crucial test of his career. This exam is composed of both an oral and written test. On clearing this exam the officer becomes a Chief Mate on board ship and is given independent command of his vessel. For a merchant naval officer this is the highest promotion. There is no specified age limit for achieving this promotion.
The Mercantile Marine Board conducts promotional exams. The subjects included are Fire Fighting, First Aid, Survival at Sea and Communications tests. This exam is a requirement laid down by the International Maritime Safety Law. Every five years the service has a system of validation.
Ratings
Ratings have to obtain Merchantile Marine Department (MMD) watch keeping certificate and 6 months training on completion of pre-sea training. For taking the certificate ratings must have X pass (including Science & Maths), should be optimum 21 years of age, medically fit and most importantly must have 3 years sea service (6 months supervised watch keeping duties).
Medical Fitness – The certificate of medical fitness is issued by the company’s doctor or by Merchant Marine Education and Research Trust (MMERT).
