Australian law degrees recognised in India

Indian students have been coming to Australia for postgraduate study, in law and other fields, for many years. Until this year, however, there was not much incentive for Indian students to undertake the basic professional qualification in law in Australia (LLB or JD), unless they wanted to remain in Australia to practise (which some do). But in an historic decision in June 2006, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has now recognised the professional law degree from a number of Australian law schools for the purpose of admission to legal practice in India.

More reasons now for Indians to study law in Australia

On completion of their secondary studies, most Australian students take this degree in combination with another degree—for example, in Arts, Science, Economics, or Commerce—over five years. However, many take their non-law undergraduate degree first, and then take the LLB or JD as a stand-alone graduate degree over three years. Many Indian students with a first degree in India at undergraduate level will be very interested in taking this graduate-entry professional law degree in Australia, as they can now take it back home and use it there as well as in Australia.

Others will continue to want to come to Australia to study for a higher degree, such as a Masters or a Doctorate, for broader reasons: pursuing a specialisation; broadening their knowledge; or just looking for an edge in the job market generally.
