Nature of Work

Every State appoints and maintains a Police Force for prevention of crime, maintenance and enforcement of law and order in the State. In the execution of their duty the police appoint task forces to investigate crime, locate criminals from hide-outs and provide detective services to track terrorist and criminal activities. They often need to operate in coordination with Intelligence and forensic experts.

In the event of natural disasters arising out of floods/ earthquakes/drought the police forces in the state are called upon to assist in relief operations. Air and road accidents or even riots demand the attention of the police force and police personnel are called upon for active relief operations.

Normal regulatory responsibilities of the Police force involves enforcing and monitoring road traffic regulations, investigating offences and complaints lodged with Police Stations. The road traffic is managed by the Traffic Police and the security cover in localities is the responsibility of local Police Station officials and personnel.

Entry and Training

Entry is open to the police service to both men and women. The police constabulary is a large force. Physically robust young boys/girls are recruited. For recruitment to the post of sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors a degree is essential and boys and girls are eligible. These posts are advertised from time to time and selection is carried out at the State level.

Gazetted posts above the sub-inspector level are filled by selection conducted by the State Public Service Commissions. Indian Police Service (IPS) appointments move to their respective state cadres to fill the senior most positions of Superintendents of Police, DIG, IG etc. Educational and age requirements are as follows: Constables : School Certificate of Class X, Age: 18-21 years, Sub-inspector/Asstt. Sub-inspector : Graduation ; Age: 20-25 years. The training after recruitment is carried out at Police Training academies. This is a rigorous training which is aimed at physical exercise, skills of shooting, riding, combat, parade, lathi training, training/handling riots, driving etc.Police training schools can be contacted for recruitment notifications.
