Nature of Work
The Indo Tibetan Border Police Force patrol the Himalayan ranges which border India and China. The Tibetan border is guarded against infiltration and smuggling and this force is trained to patrol these mountain ranges. They have specialized training in mountaineering. The hierarchy in ITBP is much like the other paramilitary forces although the nomenclatures are different.
Entry and Training
ITBP academy is at Mussorie and Chandigarh. ITBP gives great importance to mountaineering, as its forces patrol the Himalayan border. It has a high altitude training centre, the Mountaineering and Skiing Institute, where th eir personnel with special aptitude for mountaineering or skiing are sent for training. ITBP oficers are also sent overseas for further training in Mountaineering.
After a years training at the mentioned academies candidates have to undergo field training. After only 5 to 6 years of real ground work commanding positions are offered. The hierarchial ladder is that of a deputy commandant and then commandant. Additional DIG, DIG and then IG.
Selection of Constables, Sub-inspectors and Coy Commander is through direct recruitment by the Selection Board. Eligibility is similar to the other services described earlier. Senior positions are filled through promotions and deputation. Constables can rise to the rank of Coy.
Commanders in a span of 16 years.
