Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Joint Entrance Examination
The seven Indian Institutes of Technology at Guwahati, Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur and Chennai were established by the Government of India with the specific purpose of providing engineering and technological education of internationally recognised standard of excellence. The primary aim of these Institutes is to turn out engineers who not only have the most advanced technical knowledge in their chosen field but also a total view of their profession. The Institute of Technology, Benaras Hindu University at Varanasi was established by the merger of three prestigious colleges of the University, namely, College of Engineering, College of Mining and Metallurgy and College of Technology, which have to their credit excellent standards of engineering education. Indian school of mines has joined the IIT’s for the selection. For Merchant Navy, selection to Nautical training ship ‘Chanakya’ and Marine Engineering courses is also done through the IIT entrance examination. From 2002 the following institutions will also admit students through IITJEE : IIIT (Gwalior), IIIT (Allahabad), NIFFT (Ranchi) besides the IITs, ISM Dhanbad, BHU and TS Chanakya & MERI.
Admission through IIT, JEE (for Indian Nationals)
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is administered jointly by the Six Indian Institutes of Technology for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology at Mumbai/Delhi/Kanpur/Kharagpur/Chennai/ Guwahati/Roorkee and Institute of Technology (BHU) at Varanasi, School of Mines, Dhanbad, IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Gwalior, National Institute of Foundry and Forge Ranchi,Indian Institute of Science Education and Research(IISER) Kolkota and Pune(M.Sc 5year courses in Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) and TS Chankya and MERI (for Merchant Navy). Each year, one of the six IITs acts as the Organising Institute for overall operation of the JEE.
Academic eligibility - The minimum academic qualification for admission through JEE is a pass with minimum 60%(55% of SC/ST/Physically disabled) in the final examination of the 10+2 system or its equivalent with a paper each in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics in their respective Board Examinations. If any Board awards only letter-grades, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent percentage marks. In case the respective Board awards letter-grades without providing norms for converting them to equivalent percentage marks, the norms decided by the Joint Implementation Committee, JEE- 2008 shall be final.
The list of qualifying examinations are as follows :
* Higher Secondary Examination of any recognised Central/State Board of Secondary Education, under the 10+2 system.
* Pass in 3/4 year diploma recognised by AICTE by a State Board of Technical Education.
* Intermediate Science or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognised Board/University.
* First year Examination of a degree course of any recognised Indian University/Institute following a Higher Secondary Examination in the 10+1 system.

Pattern of joint entrance test - There are two papers in all, each of 3 hours duration for JEE.The questions are on Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Each paper is of roughly 200 marks. There is negative marking for incorrect answers. The question papers are in English/Hindi .The choice of the language has to be made while filling up the application form.Paper-1 and Paper-2 each have three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Both papers are of objective type, designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.
Aptitude tests for B.Arch. and B.Des. Programs will be conducted for those candidates who qualify in JEE and are desirous of joining these programmes. This is a 2 hour aptitude test conducted in each counselling institute. Only students who qualify the test are eligible for B.Arch or B. Design courses.
