Mining engineering is the study of practical application of science and mathematics in the extraction, treatment and processing of metallic and non-metallic resources from the earth. The broad range of subjects covered in the course includes planning, design, construction and maintenance of mines, mine safety, excavation and transport of minerals. The mining industry requires design engineers, production engineers, mineral engineers and safety engineers. They determine the commercial viability of the product and decide on mining methods which are safe, economical and environmentally sound. Specialist experts render advice and supervision for different minerals.
Students considering a career as a petrolem engineer should be aware that this branch of work coordinates the efforts of chemical, electrical, geoscience, mechanical, environmental branches of engineering.
