Technicians are trained through diploma programmes offered in Industrial Training Institutes(ITI’s), Vocational Training Institutes or Professional Institutes. Professional Trade workers and Diploma holders may upgrade their qualifications by acquiring membership of professional organisations such as the Institution of Engineers, Institution of Electronic & Telecommuni-cation Engineers, Aeronautical Society of India, or by pursuing a post diploma part time / full time degree course in the discipline of their specialisation.

Engineering craftsmen are trained after Class VIII and Class X. There are Model Training Institutes run by the government at Kolkata, Mumbai, Kanpur, Nainital, Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Chennai. There are several training options such as 1 year, 2 year or three year training options after Class X.

One year training can be undertaken in Welding, Forging and Heat treatment, Deisel mechanics, Sheet metal work, Carpentry.

Two year training can be taken for becoming a motor mechanic, fitter, turner, machinist, electrician, Radio/ TV mechanic, refrigeration/TV mechanic, draughtsman for mechanical and civil engineering, electronic repair mechanic, wireman and telecommunication lineman after Class X (minimum 60% is required).

Three years training is offered in Tool & die making, civil, electrical, electronics, automobile, mechanical, architectural assistantship, plastic technology, textile technology, power systems, paper technology, radio/video mechanics, transportation etc.

Various polytechnics offer three-year diploma in Architectural Assistant course. The diploma can be upgraded to the level of a degree (recognised by the Council of Architecture, the regulatory body which also awards the permission to practice) by passing the four-year course conducted by the Indian Institute of Architects (head office in Mumbai) annually. The requirements for this is a three year diploma with two year work experience.
