Selection

Selection to the various cadres of the Coast Guard are conducted every January and June for which the forms are filled six months in advance. Examinations are conducted in 2 phases.

Phase I - Preliminary selection board tests applicants in GK & IQ at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Port Blair. Graduate candidates selected should have passed XII with PCM. Girl candidates can join after graduation only (any subject).

Phase II - Those qualifying Phase I go through a final selection in New Delhi. The examination is a test of Science, IQ, GK. This is followed by interviews and medical examinations. A merit list is constituted and as per vacancies cadets are called.

Training - The basic and advanced training is given along with Naval Officers. The training begins with a capsule or orientation course at Goa for 5 months. They are designated as training officers and transferred all over the country as per their branch. Technical Officers go to INS Shivaji at Lonavala, Electrical Officers to INS Vulsara. Pilots go for training to INS Rajali near Chennai (helicopters) and to Daman for (fixed wings).

Lady Officers are trained at INS (Hamla) in Mumbai. General Duty Officers (Deck department) in Phase I are trained for 4½ months on Coast Guard ship Varuna (offshore patrol vessel). Phase II is a training for 4 weeks on patrol vessels. In Phase III a 5 month training on advanced offshore patrol ships is given. They have to pass the seamanship board here. Next is a training in logistics. This training is followed by 6 months assignment as watchkeepers after which they are eligible for taking full charge.

Naviks Selection

Written test - Shortlisted candidates are called for selection tests/interview; Candidates have the option of answering questions in English/Hindi. The test is a test of general mental ability followed by a test in English, mathematics, general sciences and general knowledge. Candidates have to qualify in all the papers and in aggregate. Results are declared on the same day.

Yantriks (technical) are tested for knowledge in their discipline.

Interview/Physical fitness test

Successful candidates of the written exam are interviewed and tested for their physical efficiency. Qualifying in PFT is mandatory. Thereafter overall successful candidates have to undergo medical examination.

Service Details

Rank structure and basic pay scales

The existing rank structure, corresponding scales of pay and promotion prospects of Coast Guard Officers are as follows :

Rank Minimum time to be spent in each Rank to become eligible for promotion

Asst Comdt/Dy Comdt 6 years as Asst Comdt

Comdt 2 years as Dy Comdr

Deputy Inspector General 8 years as Comdt

Inspector General 6 years as DIG

Payscale - 8000-275-13500 and liberal allowances. Rs 7000 to Asst. Commander (Pilot) extra.(stands revised)

Probation - 2 years or till completion of training whichever is later.

Other privileges - Officers in the coast Guard, are given a number of additional facilities which are not easy to come by in civilian life. These facilities are :

Semi-professional courses - Search and Rescue and Pollution Control Course in United States of America and Defence Services Staff College, Defence Management, Computer Programming and numerous other general courses in India.

Probation - 2 years or till completion of training whichever is later.

Leave benefit and travel concession - An officer is entitled to 45 days earned leave and in addition, 18 days casual leave every year with full pay and allowances. Earned leave can be accumulated upto 120 days. Officers and their families are entitled to free rail travel on leave once in a block of two years from duty station to home station and back.

Accomodation - Furnished accomodation at concessional rates, according to rank and marital status is admissible after successful completion of training.

Medical and dental care - Free medical and highly subsidised dental care at Government/Defence Services hospitals are provided for the officers and their families.

Food - All officers are entitled to free food when embarked on board ships and away from base port for more than 12 hours.

Insurance - Coast Guard Officers are covered under Group Insurance Scheme for a sum of Rs. 7 lakh on payment of a premium of Rs. 500 per month. Insurance is extendable up to 10 years after retirement on payment of additional premium.

Loans - Coast Guard Officers are provided Government loans for purchase of house, land, car and scooter.

Death-cum-retirement gratuity - Officers are entitled to a death-cum-retirement gratuity.

Pension - Officers are entitled to a pension equal to 50% of the basic pay after competing 35 years service which amounts to approximately Rs. 1,500 per month for Deputy Commandant and Rs. 4,500 per month for Inspector General.

Reward money - Coast Guard officers are entitled to reward money, as per the laid down rules, for apprehension of smuggled goods/salvage duties.

Pay, Perks and other benefits for naviks - Starting emoluments Rs. 4,300 (approx) Rs. 5,800 for yantriks including DA, CCA, kit maintainance allowance and liberal allowances. Other benefits : Free food, free clothing, free medical treatment of self and family including dependant parents. Leave : 45 days earned leave and 08 days casual leave every year with leave travel concession for self and family. earned leave can be accmulated. Group Insurance : An insurance cover of Rs.5 lakhs at a premium of Rs. 360 per month. Pension : Provident fund and gratuity on retirement. Promotion prospects for Naviks (GD) to officer rank subject to suitaibility and performance . Canteen store depot facilities, different loans are other benefits.
