Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was set up in March 1960 for speedy development of roads in the North-East regions of the country for Defence requirement and socio-economic development. It was conceived as a symbol of nation building, national integration, security and communicating with the plains. Border Road organisation has assumed national importance. The organisation carries out construction and development works comprising air fields building projects, cantonments, defence works etc. BRO is popularly known as General Reserve Engineer Force and it commenced its work with Army Engineer Groups.
Nature of Work
Border Roads Organisation (BRO) works in remote inaccessible, economically backward tribal areas, high snow clad mountains, thick forests and deserts often under adverse situation.
The Officers in BRO fall in the following three categories :
- Civil & Mechanical Engineers.
- Administrative Cadre
- Medical Cadre
Each projects in the organisation is headed by a Chief Engineer. The chief engineer (Brigadier) is based at suitable places fixed by the Director General Border Roads (DGBR) depending on the work and responsibilities.
Border Roads Task Forces is headed by Superintending Engineer (Colonel) who reports to Chief Engineer for execution of work in the allotted area. The lower most independent working unit of BRO is the Construction Company or RCC commanded by an Officer of the rank of Executive Engineer.
This consists of functional platoons like : Formation Cutting Platoon - for cutting new roads, Permanent Works Platoon - for constructing of culverts, retaining and breast walls, drains and parapets etc., Surfacing Platoon - for metal ling the drive way and road, Maintenance Platoon - for keeping the finished roads in good repairs. These platoons work under the direct command of Platoon Commander under the charge of Assistant Executive Engineer (Captain).
The organisation has some common service units like stores, supply and transport company. Field Work Shop looks after the repair work of the departmental vehicles. Medical Section and Medical Inspection Rooms, Dental Unit, Signal Units, Provost Units, Postal Units and Pioneer companies undertake specified responsibilities.

Entry and Training
Border Road Officers (BRO) are recruited through an examination of Union Public Service Commission based on the requirement projected by the Head of the Organisation. As per departmental recruitment and manning policy a good number of officers rise from lower ranks through departmental promotions.
The recruitment of various categories of subordinates is done centrally by the Commandant GREF Centre, Pune (Maharastra). The advertisements for officer cadres are issued by UPSC through leading news papers while those for subordinates are issued by GREF Centre through Employment News and Rozgar Samachar as well as through departmental circulars.
