Leather Technologists take a B.Tech course after qualifying the school leaving examination with Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Admission to colleges located in States is based on eligibility criteria as per domicile regulations. Entrance test is conducted for selecting candidates to the B.Tech. courses.

Footwear Technology

Footwear technology has come a long way from traditional shoemakers cutting and stitching leather, to specialised professionals utilising modern technology, working at hightech laboratories, on sophisticated machines, experimenting with a varied range of materials. The footwear industry has a range of jobs and skills comprising manufacturing operations, research and development, design, sales and marketing, quality control and management. FDDI, UP; NIFT, New Delhi; CLRI, Chennai; Govt. Leather Institutes at Kanpur and Agra, have courses in footwear technology.

Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI), Ministry of Commerce, Govt.of India,A-10A, Sector-24,Noida-201301 (U.P) website : www.fddindia.com was set up in 1986 by the Union Ministry of Commerce. The institute boasts of state-of-the-art physical and chemical labs offering a comprehensive range of testing facilities of the products of various stages, design studios facilitating computer-aided designs, modern Vicam CAD-CAM systems, Clark’s Torielli systems, fashion studios and sample rooms. On the teaching faculty are management professionals, foreign experts and internationally known designers. Besides high-tech training – the physical lab set up in collaboration with Bally, Switzerland, and chemical lab in association with PFI Germany – provide testing services of components, materials and final products. It is the first Footwear School having ISO 9001 Certification. It also has ISO14001 and ISO 17025 certifications. Syllabus, Training Software, Study Material from Australia (Melbourne College of Textile) & UK (SouthField College), management syllabus from IIM (Ahmedabad) & FMS (New Delhi) and introduction of CAD/CAM, Robots, Computerized Machinery for Shoe making complete the programme.

* PG. Diploma in Footwear Technology and Management - 2 yrs. (Full Time)

Eligibility : Graduation with minimum 50% marks or an equivalent degree. (Engineering graduates are given preference at the time of interview)

* Diploma in Footwear Technology - 3 yrs. (Full Time)

Eligibility : 10 + 2

Selection - The Entrance examination for admission to the courses is held in June. Session begins in August.

* P.G.Diploma in Leather Processing. Duration - 52 weeks. Eligibility - 55% in B.Sc. Chemistry should be one of the subjects in B.Sc.

* Certificate/Diploma in Leather Goods is conducted at CLRI and Indian Institute of Leather Products, Chennai and Kolkata centre.

* Certificate/Diploma in Leather Garments is conducted at CLRI and Indian Institute of Leather Products,Chennai and Jalandhar centre.

* Certificate/Diploma in Leather Footwear is conducted at CLRI and Indian Institute of Leather Products, Chennai.

* Certificate in Leather processing/P.G.Diploma in Leather Processing is conducted only at CLRI, Chennai.

Selection - Entrance Test, Interview, and for candidates with experience in Leather Industry, a trade test. Max.Age - 30 years Reservation for SC/ST candidates as per Govt.of India Norms. Women candidates get preference.

Course - Diploma Course in Footwear Design & Production. (The moderation of the course is done by Textile Institute, U.K) Duration - 2 years.

Eligibility - 10+2 Passed/ Appeared or equivalent. Minimum 17 yrs. Maximum 25 years (Relaxable by 5 yrs. for SC/ST candidates).

Selection : Objective type test of Arith, GK, English, Drawing.

* Certificate Courses in Footwear Design & Product Development (Affiliation with Leicester College & Textile Institute U.K.) Duration : 1 year.

Eligibility : Minimum XII, Graduate with Fine Act background are preferred.

Selection : Interview.

* Crash course in Footwear Design and Production Duration : 6 months

Eligibility : X Selection : Interview.

* Basic Design & Pattern Engineering. Duration : 6 months (4 days/week)

Eligibility : X with one year experience in Footwear manufacturing (preferred) Selection : Interview.

The institutte also runs short duration courses for supervisors, technicians and 3D shoe CAD Course.
